Inpatient physical, occupational, and speech therapy services are available to patients in our acute, swing, skilled and long term care settings. Our focus is to help restore each patient’s function to allow them to become as independent as possible and to be discharged to the appropriate setting. Our rehab staff works closely with physicians and nursing staff to coordinate care for patients to maximize their progress with therapy.
We provide education and training to families of patients, as appropriate, before discharge to ensure carryover with progress made in rehab. Therapists are involved in discharge planning to ensure the patients have appropriate services, such as home therapy, and assistive and adaptive equipment upon discharge from our facility.
Outpatient physical and occupational therapy services are available to patients in our outpatient department located at Grant Memorial Hospital. Convenient parking, wheelchair accessibility and individualized care are provided. We treat patients of all ages with a variety of injuries and physical impairments.
We have certified therapists in LSVT LOUD and BIG, a highly researched treatment protocol for Parkinson Disease and other neurological conditions. LSVT LOUD has documented improvements in: vocal loudness, intonation, voice quality, articulation, diminished facial expression and impaired swallowing. LSVT BIG has documented improvements in: faster walking with bigger steps, improved balance, increased trunk rotation, and improved activities of daily living.
Our speech therapist is a Registered MBSImP Clinician (Modified Barium Swallow Impairment Profile). GMH is one of 4 registered facilities in WV to provide this service. It utilizes standardized and evidence-based practice to interpret physiological swallowing impairments observed during the Modified Barium Swallow Study. A Videofluoroscopic swallowing study is available to patients to allow the speech therapist to determine more specifically the cause for difficulty swallowing.
We have two Graston Technique Providers on staff to provide a remarkable procedure to detect and treat areas of “scar tissue” or adhesions in soft tissue that can reduce our range of motion and cause pain. These specialists use specially-designed stainless steel instruments with unique treatment edges and angles to deliver this manual therapy.
Aquatic physical therapy provided by GMH therapists at Hardy County Wellness Center. Water can allow for movement to be performed with reduced forces on the joints. It promotes relaxation and decreases muscle guarding and spasm, which can allow for earlier movement and weightbearing. Many can benefit, including pre- and post- surgical, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, balance disorders, sports injuries and orthopedic conditions. A physician referral is required.
Pelvic health therapy is a treatment approach aimed at addressing the many issues that can affect the pelvis, pelvic muscles, organs, and how they function. Our therapist has advanced training from Herman & Wallace in the anatomy and physiology of these areas, as well as how dysfunction impacts proper function, comfort, independence, and the dignity of our patients. Treatments are provided with privacy and comfort in mind.
